Common Good Faith with Mariann Budde the Episcopal Bishop of Washington
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
Mariann Budde is the Episcopal Bishop of Washington DC.
She is a great leader and the author of the fabulous book How We Learn to Be Brave.
Her responsibilities include the oversight of the National Cathedral and 80+ other churches and institutions in the DC area.
One of those churches is St John's Church at Lafayette Square right near the White House.
This is the church that Donald Trump used as the backdrop for his egregious "photo-op" holding a bible after ordering the clearing of the square by military personnel.
Bishop Mariann's clear condemnation of that action thrust her into national attention.
But her bravery and leadership have been growing and in service of the Common Good for decades.
Doug Pagitt talks with Bishop Mariann about faith, Common Good, and How To Learn to be Brave.

What the Debt Ceiling Is and Why it is No (Common) Good
Thursday May 18, 2023
Thursday May 18, 2023
The debt ceiling is a US Federal Government self-imposed restriction that serves no purpose and causes harm.
We will discuss how the Federal Budget works and why something like an arbitrary "ceiling" is wrong-headed.
The US Federal Government doesn't "spend" money, it creates money. It is a "Sovereign Currency." Like all Sovereign Currencies it is different than all State and Local government spending.

Friday May 12, 2023
Friday May 12, 2023
Doug Pagitt and Dan Deitrich sit down with author Zach Hunt to talk about his new book, Godbreathed, and what it really means for the Bible to be divinely inspired. "What if the imperfections and contradictions in Scripture aren’t an accident? What if they were allowed to be there by the Holy Spirit in order to draw us beyond the literal words on the page and deeper into the spiritual truth God is trying to teach us?"
Zack Hunt has spent the last decade writing about the interplay of faith and politics in the public sphere on his eponymous blog, Substack, and Patheos as well as contributing articles to multiple publications. He’s also made appearances in Rolling Stone, The Boston Globe, Huffington Post, and various other media outlets.

A Church for Those Who Have Been Left Out, Created By Those Who Have Been Left Out
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Doug Pagitt and Dan Deitrich sit down with Rev. Jonah Overton (they/them), a queer and trans community organizer and the lead pastor of Zao MKE Church, to talk about why the church should be Jesus-focused, justice-centered, and radically inclusive.
Rev. Jonah P. Overton (they/them) loves being part of a church that is being recreated and reimagined by people who were historically denied access to traditional Christian leadership. Their favorite thing about Zao MKE Church is experiencing what church looks like when those of us who were left out get to be in charge.
Jonah is extremely passionate about the Bible and reclaiming Christian scriptures for liberation and for the Kingdom. They are so passionate that they started two podcasts: Jonah & the Peacock and Christian Queeries. In Jonah & the Peacock, Jonah interviews others about their relationship to faith and scripture, retelling the texts through a more inclusive and trauma-informed lens. Christian Queeries is a podcast that Jonah and Cameron have together where they answer listener questions about Christianity.
